A Makeover

Today I am making over a little stool that I have owned for years.  I have had it so long that I don't remember where I even bought it.....but my best guess is Kirkland's. This little stool stood by my bed for probably 10 years.  I used it to kneel on to say my evening prayers every night before I went to bed.  You see I don't have a lot of strengths, but one of my strengths is to recognize my weaknesses.  Here's one of my weaknesses - getting in bed to pray.  If I get in bed to pray, I inevitably wake up at 1 or 2 a.m. trying to figure out where I left off.  It is bad.  I just can't do it.

Unfortunately, after changing color schemes in the bedroom several times, this stool just no longer matched and was put in the closet.  I literally took to praying standing up.

Let's divert for a moment to a little then and now story:

THEN - In fifth grade I was as limber as they come.  I could lay on my stomach and curl my head toward my toes and my toes toward my head until they touched.  And I could do this with the greatest of ease.  It was such a novelty around my school that they named this particular move after me and occassionally there would be a knock on my English, History or Math class door from a student who was sent by the P.E. teacher wanting me to come over and demonstrate for whatever class was in the gym at the time.

Fast forward 30 or so years......

NOW- Last week I grabbed my wallet from my purse and the change compartment was open so coins spilled all over the floor.  I literally stood there and counted it to determine if it was worth stooping down to pick it up.  It turned out to be $1.87 which helped me muster the energy to actually pick it up.

Yes, if you know of a good yoga class, you should totally share it with me.  I am indeed pathetic.

So this is why I NEED my prayer stool back.  It allows me to pray on my knees again while saving my knees from the floor and I can actually get back up at the end.

Here's the little stool.

I found this fabric and trim at Hobby Lobby.

I started by removing the legs and tearing off the existing trim.

I then found a little screw driver that would fit under the tiny little stapes and pulled out all 52 of the staples that held on the black lining.  Thank you, quality control at the stool factory for making sure this fabric would never come off. At this point I made the smart decision to apply my fabric over this existing fabric.

I then covered the original button and threaded it back onto the stool and stapled it down.  This was the most challenging part.  But luckily I had some yard darning needles and they worked perfectly.  I have no idea why I own yarn darning needles. I don't recall ever darning any yarn, but glad they were here.

I reused the black lining and reattached it along with my own 52 staples. Then I simple screwed the legs back in.

Then I simply hot glued the new trim on.  So are you ready to see the finished product? Well here she is.......

Welcome back to the bedroom little stool.  I sure have missed you.

  1. Great job on the stool. It looks as good as new! I need to get me one because I can defintely relate to the loss of limberness over the decades. My bedtime prayer position is an elevated plank. (sounds kinda athletic, huh?)
